wordkit have drawn a step pyramid of the impact of writing on the individual and ultimately on society. At the top of our writing pyramid is a small box containing simple words. But look beneath and see the impact that writing can have!

Elizabeth Gates
Handling language is Elizabeth’s life. As a child, she started writing because no-one was writing the stories she wanted to read. Since then – with a BA Honours in English Language and Literature and an MA in Linguistics – she has taught English Language Skills and English for Special Purposes to adult learners at home and abroad and been a journalist on health and well-being issues (first published in 1985). And since 2005, she has had her own writing and communication coaching practice – currently running workshops on creative writing and writing for professional development. Simply, she says, because she loves the excitement in a room full of writers.

I believe that self expression through writing contributes significantly to people’s mental health and hope to spread the Word in the future!
I have often incorporated writing in my therapeutic work. Frequently, it has been life changing and I’m glad to have been able to encourage the practice of a skill that is much under-used.
I have worked in a variety of settings including psychiatry, the voluntary sector, the private sector and prisons. Over the last 14 years, I have worked as a Counsellor for several EAPs.
